What is stamped at the moment of birth
Saju palja begins from one idea: at the moment you are born, the energy of heaven and earth at that instant is imprinted in you.
Giving names to time
To record that energy, the ancients gave time names. One name for the year you were born, one for the month, one for the day, one for the hour. Each name is two characters, so the four together make eight. Those eight characters are the record of the energy at the moment you were born, and that is saju palja: eight characters drawn from four moments of time.
The five energies
These eight characters are not just a way of writing a date. Each one carries one of five energies: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The ancients believed everything in the world moves by the flow of these five. Wood feeds fire, fire burns to earth, earth yields metal, metal gathers water, and water feeds wood again. In the other direction, water puts out fire, fire melts metal, metal cuts wood, wood breaks earth, and earth dams water. Relationships that help and relationships that hold back exist side by side.
